[Excerpted] MASHHAD (Iran): International Master Eesha Karavade threw open the Asian Women's chess championship with a finely crafted victory over overnight leader Munguntuul Batkhuyag of Mongolia in the sixth round on Sunday.

Munguntuul, who seemed to be running away from the title after defeating top seed D Harika in round four, could not quite find her momentum against Eesha who now shares the lead with the Mongolian.

Munguntuul and Eesha have 4.5 points apiece and Harika now shares the third spot on 4 points. In her sixth round game, Harika was held to a draw by Uzbek Olga Sabirova.

Eesha had to be careful with black pieces in a Sicilian defense game.

Munguntuul went for a sharp set up but Eesha was well-armed and following timely counter play reached a double edged position wherein the Mongolian went astray.

Eesha knocked down two pawns and reached a won rook and pawns endgame to wrap the issue after 62 moves.

Women: Munguntuul Batkhuyag (Mgl, 4.5) lost to Eesha Karavade (4.5); Olga Sabirova (Uzb, 4) drew with D Harika (4); Pham Le Thao Nguyen (Vie, 4) drew with Huang Qian (Chn, 4); Nafisa Muminova (Uzb, 3) lost to Tan Zhongyi (Chn, 4); Mary Ann Gomes (4) beat Nguyen Thi Thanh An (Vie, 4); Padmini Rout (3) drew with Irine Kharisma Sukandar (Ina, 3.5); Hoang Thi Bao Tram (Vie, 3.5) beat Minoo Asgarizadeh (Iri, 2.5); Soumya Swaminathan (3) beat Ghazal Hakimifard (Iri, 2); Mariam Vardkar (Iri, 0.5) lost to Swathi Ghate (2.5).
